I had to take part in what is uncharacteristic violence for me tonight.
The oldest female dog has been showing a lot of aggression to the younger female, who is her own puppy. She has pinned the younger one down on several occasions. Several times I have stopped her and even turned her upside down in a submissive position and held her there. That works for a while, like a week or two. It has also made her less violent on subsequent occasions. Until today.
Last night, she had puppies. This evening, I went out and found all but two are dead. No sign of injury or insects to any of them. My suspicion is that the puppies were deformed, the product of the mother and her own male puppy. Probably a deformation of the lungs or digestive system.
However, she has now attacked two of the younger female's puppies tonight, trying to actually take their throats out. The attacks were a couple of hours apart. The first time, I held her down and smacker her really hard on the nose. That attack took place inside the solarium.
The second attack had no chance of being provoked by the puppy. First, the puppy is a coward and runs from any loud noise. However, the biggest thing was that she was attacking the puppy while the puppy was underneath the stairs!
In both of these cases, the puppies were scared out of their wits for a long time afterward. They were each also bleeding rather profusely from their mouths. I could not touch them for a long time after the attacks.
After I interrupted the second attack, I tore into the oldest female. I kicked her in the mouth. Not hard enough to do major damage but she won't be trying to take out one of the puppies throats again tonight.
This is the same dog who the neighbor accused of killing her Chihuahua. I doubted that account but am seriously rethinking it. Every one of my other dogs are afraid of her.
These attacks cannot have anything to do with hunger. None of these dogs are thin. It may have to do with jealousy. It is possible she killed her own puppies on purpose. Though, as I said, there was no sign of an attack. She could have laid on top of them, though.
No matter. If she attacks any of the other dogs again, I'm going to have to take her to the shelter.
