Botanical Garden

Daughter asked to go to the Botanical Garden today. So, that's what we did this afternoon and spent the whole afternoon there. Not aerobic exercise but much better than being sedentary!

Plus, I like the fact that she is balanced and interested in things enough to want to go to the Botanical Garden without being forced.

We picked up a couple of good but inexpensive blueberry bushes today. I also got a cheap tap and die set from Harbor Freight to attach the fertilizer injector to the irrigation system.

I've bought several blueberry bushes in the past. However, they all died. I now know the mistake I made was including native soil at all in planting them. The first two I bought years ago from a local nursery. They told me blueberry bushes die frequently here but they didn't understand why. This was from the owner of the place which has been here for decades. I tried the acidifier they sold me. Plants still died. I learned more over years and got two more bushes two years ago, tried separating them from the main garden with bottomless buckets. No good. This time, I'm keeping them in containers and using acidified water. I'll mix compost and potting soil, use sulfuric acid to balance the pH, and only after that place these in larger containers than they are currently in. They already have lots of flowers on them. I know the sulfuric acid is a safe practice for them because that's what commercial blueberry growers use. If these two bushes produce a combined 1-1 1/2 lbs of blueberries, they will pay for themselves, at the cost of blueberries now. Once they're large enough, I'll try multiplying them from cuttings. Hopefully this year but after harvest.

So, my next door neighbors are having a baby shower. A baby shower which started before 6 PM and is still getting louder and more drunken at nearly 1 AM. I sense another non-English speaking Fetal Alcohol Syndrome child on it's way into the world with the full support of a large family propagating those values.
