I am still in the habit of including the money in the savings account in my mental calculations of what is available to spend. Need to get out of that habit and start ignoring that money again. Plus start putting more into the savings.
I do have money which is going into a retirement account and I'm not really sure how much is there. Not any major amount. I also have a health savings account which is mostly funded by my employer. That came in handy for the dental exam/xrays. Still not major amount but enough to help a little.
In any case, happy I have money to take daughter to the State Fair, which starts next week. The following week is "Globalquerque", which we started going to each year a few years back.
Kind of a bummer. The apple tree keeps shedding apples. From what I've read, apples stop ripening once they're off the tree. Still okay to eat, if you don't eat too many. Best if mixed with ripe apples, though. The green ones are really tart. Daughter loves the green ones.
Still a stray cucumber here and there but never had enough to make pickles this year. Daughter loves my pickles, so guess I'll buy some cucumbers to make more. She'll eat a whole jar at one sitting. No objection, since they have virtually no calories. I still have a couple of jars left from last year.
Some of the tomatoes are beginning to ripen. Can't believe it's Sept and only had one ripe cherry tomato this year. Oh, well. Less work so far. Making tomato paste is pretty time consuming. Though well worth it.
Lots of cantaloupe growing. Too bad I'm not fond of cantaloupe. Just planted lots of it to make sure at least one or two would grow.
Couple of watermelon getting to an edible harvest size. Amazing that I've controlled weeds better and get fewer melons and smaller ones than when they grew in a mass of weeds.
No pumpkins yet that I've seen. If none are growing now, it's not likely I'll have any of a size to harvest for Halloween.
I think a lot of the problems this year have been because of the grasshopper invasion earlier in the year. Still no small number left but nothing like spring and early summer. I may have done better if I had applied insecticidal soap but even avoided that this year to minimize impact on pollinators. That worked. Lots of predatory wasps and hornets. Have not seen that many bees this year. I did early on but not recently. Or maybe my eyesight sucks too much and I need to wear my glasses in the garden.
It's already cooling down enough that I heard flocks of geese migrating yesterday. Temperatures don't show it so much but animals seem to know some things which we don't. If they're migrating now, cold isn't far behind. Or they're migrating early to get as far south as possible because it's going to get really cold this winter. Wait and see.
