Daughter and I had a fairly creative weekend. Started off going to Home Depot for the first Sat of the month Kids Project. This month it was a small planter. She did an awesome job on it. She's getting better and better at building things!
We picked up a project for her to do for her mother for Mother's Day next weekend. The project is finished, just going to add a couple of separate items she wants to get her mother.
Also picked up two owl sun catchers which immediately caught her attention.
I finished the bird house with the see-through back. Though I admit I made some pretty glaring errors. It's still functional and I have materials to build one or two more, plus maybe tint a couple of windows in the house.
Picked up the major pieces of lumber and stuff needed to work on her room for storage. The hardest issue is that I want to move the table saw in her room, so I can just cut and put things in place immediately. To do that, I may wind up building a mobile rest for the table saw. Considering my options on that.
The entire project is going to cover 12 ft of wall space, up to about 3 ft tall. The top will be all white melamine for easy cleaning and the front I plan as white with natural wood accents. I have the melamine tops for the entire length already. It will start off being shelf units but will eventually be combination shelves and drawers. I'll leave the shelves in place when I install the drawers because I like that arrangement better than empty space behind drawers, where things fall all the way to the bottom. Once again, I am building the main frame of the structure with 2x4's. Heavy but really solid and should last for many years through lots of abuse. However, I have learned from past lessons and making it more modular than before, so each 4 ft section can be moved after simply lifting the desk off.
During the same time frame, I can get new legs installed on her bed and finish painting her room. Not much to do but a little.
I actually think I can get the majority of the frame and tops put together in one evening, about 3-4 hours.
When I build the drawers, I want to build them the old fashioned way, with reinforcing slats every few inches. I hate how flimsy some things are made, where the bottom of drawers sag and may collapse.
Still fighting a battle of ticks with the dogs. Which is why I haven't given the pups away yet. They are loaded with ticks, in spite of my bathing them and spraying them. The number has decreased but they keep getting new ones. Today I sprayed suspected reservoir areas and got some tick treatment on the way home. (Of course, the Dollar Tree near the ex's carries the tick treatment, while the one near my house does not. Guess they figure people in poorer sections of town don't bother treating for ticks.) Treated them soon as I walked in the door. Have to check them in a couple of days and see how they look. If they're clear, then I can give them away this week.
Okay, have to take my vitamins, wash dishes and get some sleep.
