Okay, I ordered an air soft pellet gun from Amazon to deal with the neighbor's dogs crapping in the yard. Lower velocity and safer than a standard pellet gun. Less expensive than buying locally. Even with shipping, the gun, plastic pellets and speed loader cost less than any showing in stock at Walmart.
I still want to get a high velocity pellet gun for other purposes, target shooting and home defense. They're safer than a regular gun but powerful enough for small game hunting, especially with some of the modern ammo produced for them. Also much quieter.
Some people rely on the intimidation factor with weapons. In my case, I never pull a weapon unless I'm going to use it. If I'm going to use it, I have several criteria I prefer. Anyone facing me underestimates the weapon. Quiet, so it draws less attention. And not commonly viewed as a deadly weapon, meaning I would not face weapons charges in the case of defending myself/my daughter/my home. The lower intimidation factor means it should still have some intimidation quality but not brand me as a psycho. The lower velocity and need to charge the air chamber while still leaving ammo in it makes for it being safe while also low time to be ready to fire. In the event of accidental misfire, it is less likely to be fatal and life threatening. However, it can be very damaging and even fatal with properly focused use if completely necessary. Otherwise, a good serious warning to an attacker.
It's also cheaper for both the weapon and the ammo.
I can also start teaching my daughter how to handle a weapon with this. She's afraid of real guns. This would be a good step in that direction without the scare factor. Or the noise. She still hates sudden loud noises.
