Had some crazy rain last evening. It rather suddenly started raining around 6 PM and got so heavy I could barely see the trees in the back yard!
The dogs are too dumb to get under anything, so I let them in. Put down towels for them to lie down on. However, they never laid down. Or sat down. Or calmed down. I let them wander from room to room for a bit. Then it got annoying. They were running from room to room and would not calm down. Finally the rain slowed down, so I just put them back outside.
Now I have to mop the entire house.
Oh, well. Hope that helped leach the soil in the garden of some of the salt and toxins.
Bush green beans are coming up very nicely now. The pole beans I planted last week are poking through. Cucumber vines are maturing late, as usual. Can't blame salt this time, since they're all in potting soil. Now I understand why they're often grown in greenhouses. Not to mention cucumber beetles.
I am changing tactics again. Instead of tilling, I'm going to leave the existing mounds in place, solarize them for a few months and add compost to the tops before planting next year. I think tilling just brings salt back to the surface.
Daughter and I need to harvest carrots this weekend. Do what I can about grass and weeds next week and plant the late summer crops after that. Maybe this way I can have a fall crop of carrots and spinach.
